Problems training Motorola SRC-300a (BTV)

I am attempting to set up a new BTV installation and followed the instructions on this site to a "T." The remote is a Motorola SRC-300A and is very uncooperative when I get to the point where I attempt to "train" BTV to understand the remote codes. I downloaded the lrnhelper utility and I believe I am using it properly but everytime a code is transmitted it shows up as two or three digits- usually three. I am very frustrated. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Also sometimes the dialog of the lrnhelper utility is spontaneously being filled with data from goodness knows where.)
