Using a SA 3100 & 3200

At the moment, I have Beyond TV running with a Scientific Atlanta 3100 and the other tuner card is using basic cable. I want to get an SA 3200, but I'm not quite sure how to set up the USB-UIRT. Are the 3100 and 3200 too similar to be controlled by the USB-UIRT? If so, I have a Microsoft IR thing, but I'm not sure if that would work properly. I keep seeing references to a "Stereo" IR device that plugs into the USB-UIRT. I'm not even sure where to get one of those and thought it would be great if I could get the USB-UIRT to control the 3100 since it's already set up for it and plug the Microsoft one in to control the 3200. I'm assuming it's a Microsoft device because it came with my Media Center computer. Then, if I understand the Zone thing properly, I'd set up the files for Zone 3 for the USB-UIRT and either Zone 1 or 2 for the external emitter.

Anyway, is any of this possible or do I have it all wrong?
