IR LED for self made external emitter

Please, what kind of IR LED I can use for my external emitter ?
I think SFH487 is ok, but I am not sure...

...just about any with a 800-1000 nm wavelength.

Is the IR extender really nothing else than a pure IR LED with a cable and a cinch plug?

All of the stick-on emitters you buy are exactly that -- a 1/8" plug wired to an IRLED, nothing more.
