1/8 port and compulink

I was wondering if the compulink on system components are just wired ir transmission lines. I have a pioneer tape deck that can be controled via a wired connection to another component that has a remote( I only have the tape deck)..

From what I know, I believe the compulink is similar to Sony's S-Link, which is basically a digital version of the un-modulated IR signal.
