slow sending?

After I learn a code (in raw format) from a remote, I can then successfully send it using Async transmit, but there is a quite noticable delay with the transmitter. Seems to be about 1000-1500 milliseconds, which is quite a lot for a remote.
I'm using my Mac Mini's remote for testing purposes, playing a movie... QuickTime responds instantly when I click a remote button. But transmitting that code from the UIRT test app it takes over a second.
Is this a symptom of the IR transmitter? Or the way I'm learning the codes? Any suggestion?
