Can't control Emotiva UMC-1 processor

Postby deanej » Mon Oct 11, 2010 4:33 pm

New Emotiva UMC-1 won't respond to IR from USB-UIRT.

I'm sending it from Elve software. UMC-1 doesn't react in any way whatsoever. Other devices react OK.

I have "learned" the code into Elve from the original factory remote, from my Pronto TSU-2000, and have cut and pasted the discreet hex code from the Emotiva site. No approach works.

The UMC-1 has a IR "IN" jack that can be used as well as using an emitter. The emitter lights up and the blast is getting to the receiver.

I have "taught" the code into my Pronto with complete success.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on.

Thanks

Try learning and transmitting directly with the USB-UIRT using lrnhelper which can be downloaded here.

If you are unsuccessful with lrnhelper post your learned pronto code.

Thanks for your suggestion Whitewater.

I tried the Irnhelper software without success. When I transmit the IR from the remote, it assigns a "Received UIR Event Code" number in the upper right hand corner, but nothing else happens.

Since it didn't register a code in the window, I can't post it. However, I can post the Pronto code I get when I use Elve, which, of course, doesn't work.

Can you post the learned code from lrnhelper, or explain what happens when you try to learn with lrnhelper.

Also post a sample hex code from Emotiva site.

When I try to learn with Irnhelper, it assigns a "Received UIR Event Code" number in the upper right hand corner of the form the moment I press the button on the teaching remote, but nothing else happens. All other boxes remain blank.

No matter what I try, it's as if there was a filter that prevented the code from passing through the the USB-UIRT in either direction.

Here is the hex code for PowerON from the Emotiva site.

0000 006d 0022 0002 0155 00ab 0015 0015 0015 0041 0014 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0014 0016 0015 0016 0015 0015 0015 0040 0016 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0041 0014 0041 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0016 0014 0041 0015 0040 0015 0041 0014 0016 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0016 0015 0040 0015 0016 0015 0016 0014 0016 0015 0041 0014 0016 0015 0040 0015 05e8 0155 0055 0015 0e39

Thanks again for your interest in helping.

Deane

EDIT: I should clarify my comment about nothing passing through the USB-UIRT. When I transmit the learned code from Elve through the USB-UIRT, the blinker indicates something is being sent. The Emotiva doesn't respond however.

Sorry for the long delay in the reply, but if you are still watching this thread try the following code for PowerOn:
Code: Select all
0000 006D 0022 0002 0158 00AA 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0015 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0040 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0015 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 0040 0016 05ED 0157 0055 0015 0E48

Thanks Canoe. I really appreciate your help. I'm in a wilderness here by myself.

A quick check indicates it doesn't work, but I have a suspicion on the code from the web site. Emotiva UMC-1 had a plastic remote at first, then changed to a metal remote. Each used different codes. I believe the one on the web site is the plastic code (they don't say), and I have a metal.

I am suspicious of a frequency issue and have been trying to get someone at Emotiva to tell me the frequency the UMC-1 metal remote is uses. It's possible it may be too high for USB-UIRT. It works very well in my Pronto TSU-2000.

I can't imagine anything wrong in my USB-UIRT hook-up as it handles IR code from my Pronto very well for everything else.

My USB-UIRT doesn't have the extended frequency option.

Received an answer from Emotiva.

The UMC runs on standard NEC type 38,028.866 Hz IR.

Doesn't seem like that would create a frequency issue with the USB-UIRT.

Now I'm stumped as to where the issue might be.

Based on your comments about the optional 56K IR detector, I'm wondering if you may be misunderstanding how some aspects of the USB-UIRT work. The optional 56K detector as well as the 36-40K detector are not used for learning at all. Learning is accomplished with the aid of the wideband IR photodiode frequency detector (see image below).
Image
The wideband frequency detector has a very short detection distance - you must hold your remote about an inch from the detector. The wideband frequency detector, as previously mentioned, is only used for learning. The codes learned must be captured by the host software via the UUIRTLearnIR function of the USB-UIRT API and stored in your host software's database. The host software must be able to pass the stored value to the USB-UIRT via the UUIRTTransmitIR function for transmitting using the 2 high powered infrared emitters.

The 36-40K and the optional 56K detectors are used only when you want to receive codes from the remote controls you already have and you want the USB-UIRT to react to these remotes via the UUIRTSetReceiveCallback function of the API. The UIRTSetReceiveCallback function is only used to detect what action was performed on your existing remote. It does not "relay" the received code but only provides a unique identifier for the received code. How the unique identifier is utilized is determined by the host software.

With all of this said, I am not familiar with the host software (Elve software) you are using so I have no idea how it is handling the USB-UIRT API functions. I would suggest you go back and try LrnHelper again. Hold your remote about an inch in front of the IR photodiode frequency detector, click the "Learn an IR Code" button and then press the button on your remote control you want to learn. Your learned code should appear in the "IR Code (Pronto Format)" text box. Once you have learned code in the text box, the "Test Transmitt IR Code" button should become active. Click this button to transmit the code and see if your hardware responds.

You may have knew this stuff already, but I want to make sure we are singing off the same sheet of music.

Thanks for the excellent explanation.

I may have learned something new. Since Irnhelper wouldn't learn from the UMC-1 remote, I decided I should attempt the process with other brand remotes to try to further isolate the problem. Guess what. Irnhelper doesn't learn from two different brand remotes either.

Yet, I use the USB-UIRT daily to receive into my Elve software from my Pronto with complete success.

I've tried the learning process numerous times, placing the transmitting remote at various distance from the USB-UIRT including right up in it's face.

I changed the USB input to a different location, which caused a reinstall of the driver, which was good, but no change.

I'm now wondering if the issue might be in the USB-UIRT interface with my computer. I have no idea where to look for anything in that regard.

I would try installing the USB-UIRT drivers and LrnHelper on another PC. If you can't learn with LrnHelper then you will have problems with any software since the USB-UIRT developer wrote LrnHelper. I have successfully used the USB-UIRT on XP and Vista - haven't tried WIN 7 yet. I would plug the USB-UIRT directly in the USB port on the PC and avoid hubs. If this fails then you probably have a defective USB-UIRT.

Just curious, do you shutdown your Elve software when you try LrnHelper? If not this could be causing some conflicts.

I did not, and that's a good suggestion. I will try it.

The press of business has kept me from further testing for a couple of days, but I hope to get back to it today.

Appreciate your interest and suggestions.

I turned off the Elve use of USB-UIRT and tried the "learn" function.

Got the following:

0000 006D 0000 0002 0158 0056 0016 0E4F

That is, of course, much shorter than the codes supplied by Emotiva.

My UMC-1 suddenly quit outputting audio so Emotiva is shipping me a new one. It will take a couple of days for it to get here so I can try this code.

Well, that code definitely does not have enough info to work. Have you tried learning with another remote, i.e. your TV remote?

I turned off the Elve use of USB-UIRT and tried the "learn" function.

I would try shutting down the software completely and making sure no Elve services are running.
