Different key, same IR code problem

Postby sonofdbn » Tue Jan 27, 2004 1:41 am

I'm using USB-UIRT and was trying to "teach" Girder some IR codes. However, the IR code which is captured is exactly the same, regardless of whether I press Up, Down, Right, Left or Enter on the remote. I'm sure I'm making a newbie mistake here, but couldn't find anything on what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?

I should perhaps add that the remote I am using is for a Pioneer DVD player, and I have successfully "taught" the codes to a Marantz learning remote, so I assume the remote should not be the problem.

(I posted this query on the Girder forum and it was suggested I try here.)

sonofdbn,

Hmmm that's a new one. Please try the following:

1. Grab another remote you have around the house (for another piece of equipment) and verify it does *not* exhibit this behavior.

2. Please post the code you're always getting from the Pioneer remote.

3. What firmware is on your unit? To find this out, go to the USB-UIRT plugin screen, press the 'Configuration' button and go to the 'About' tab.

4. Can you please capture an 'IR Debug' for one of these keys? To do this, go to the USB-UIRT Plugin screen, press 'IR Debug', then place the remote about 4 inches away from the USB-UIRT and press and hold one of the buttons. The USB-UIRT LED should flash and you'll see a progress bar move on the screen until it completes. Then paste the numerical data that appear in the screen to your post.

5. Do *all* the buttons on the DVD remote generate the same code?

Thanks,

Jon

1. Tried a Panasonic TV remote control; works fine.
2. Pioneer code is 430F105115F1
3. Firmware is 5.4, plug-in is 2.5.9
4. VERY weird. No IR signal appears to be recognised when I use "IR Debug" - the bar doesn't appear at all, and the red indicator on the unit does not light up. However, if I don't select "IR Debug" (i.e., at any other time except for Learn - see the end of this paragraph) the indicator light DOES light up when I press the button. This applies regardless of whether I press one of the "problem" keys on the remote or one of the working ones (see below). I've verified that IR Debug does work with the Panasonic remote. The same symptoms are displayed when I select "Learn" instead of "IR Debug" from the same screen.
5. REALLY weird. Girder responds very strangely to the Pioneer remote. a) although the red indicator lights up, the Girder green light (bottom right) does not always respond. b) in Learn mode in the "Evenstring" part, the captured code is not consistent. Sometimes pressing the same key consecutively does not generate the same string, sometimes it does. c) the code received by the unit as indicated in the centre part of the bottom of the Girder screen (next to the green light) is not always consistent with the string indicated in the Learn section. Again, I've verified that Girder behaviour is as expected when using the Panasonic remote.

So I'm guessing that somehow the Pioneer remote is causing the problem. Its model number (the remote) is CU-DV023, and it has an SR logo, which I thought indicated some sort of remote control IR standard.

Regarding the Girder strange behavior, perhaps its possible that *multiple* different codes are being generated in succession when you press a button, and the codes on the status bar flash too quickly to see the first code, which would be the one 'learned' by Girder.

Could you try the IR Debug again, but at different distances? Since remotes vary in strength, you may have to either move the remote further away or closer to the USB-UIRT. Also, make sure you line the remote up with the face of the USB-UIRT (aim it directly into the USB-UIRT face, just to the left of the Red LED). Another thing to check is fresh batteries in the remote for this exercise.

Note: The reason you need to hold the remote close during an IR Debug or a USB-UIRT 'LEARN' is because the USB-UIRT uses a short-range 'Learning' sensor which is *different* than the sensor used during normal IR reception.

And Girder crashed again after this.

Thanks for your patience on this.

Can I ask for one more thing -- the model of the DVD player?

Thanks,

Jon

OK,

I figured out what's going on here, but I'm not sure the easiest way to work around it, but let me explain and we'll go from there:

All of the remote codes from your Pioneer DVD remote send an alternating pattern of two codes -- a unique code as well as a *common* code which is the same for all buttons. What this means, for example, is when you press the '1', button, your remote emits:

C 1 C 1 C 1 C 1 ...

where 'C' is a common code and 1 is the unique '1' code.

Pressing the '2' button will send:

C 2 C 2 C 2 C 2 ...

So if you hold a button down and watch closely, you will see two alternating codes appear on the Girder status bar.

The difficulty is getting Girder learn to capture the 'Unique' code to use as an event trigger. If you can catch the unique code on the status bar you could manually edit the GML for now and put that code in ... a thought.

Just saw your response, but just to fill in the details, it's a Pioneer DV-K301C (3 disc carousel changer, and yes, it has karaoke but I swear that's not why I bought it.) It's about 5 years old, perhaps more. There is a picture of the remote control at http://www.dvdremotecontrols.com/Mfrs/Pioneer/PioneerDVD/VXX2597.jpg

It seems to be impossible to capture the unique code consistently (if at all). Was wondering if it would be possible to add a feature to the plug-in to filter out the *common* code? Of course if this common code is a "feature" which only very few remotes have, then it's probably not worth the effort.

Could yougive this a try...

Hold down a remote button while looking at the main Girder screen. Do you see two alternating codes appearing on the status bar?

I've tried what you suggested. For every key I tested (just about all of them), only ONE code ever appears in the status bar - I never see alternating codes. In just about every case, though, the code is the same. Only a few keys generate a different code.

Btw, it seems that the SR logo on the remote indicates that it follows the RC5 remote standard developed by Philips.I assume you're familiar with it, but if not, here's a quick googled link: http://www.stiftsbogtrykkeriet.dk/~mcs/Remote/Protocol.html

Hmmm, I need to look at this a bit more, then.

Jon, my apologies: I now have no idea where I got the notion that the SR logo indicated that it followed the RC5 protocol. The SR (System Remote) logo is Pioneer's own protocol. There's some very limited information on it here: http://winlirc.sourceforge.net/technicaldetails.html

sonofdbn,

I have posted a newer version of the firmware which should see both codes each time you press a button. You can download this firmware and the flash utility at:

www.usbuirt.com/firm5_7.zip

Unfortunately, as I stated before, even though you'll see 2 different events in Girder, the first event produced will likely be the common one between multiple buttons. This means that Girder will trap the first event when using the Learn even button. You'll have to hand-edit your GML most likely.

Please let me know how this works for you,

Jon
