Problem learning Sky Digital (Satellite Receiver) Codes

Postby Gerbil » Sun Feb 23, 2003 2:27 pm

My USB-UIRT arrived in the UK safe and sound last week it's working well apart from one small problem.

I can't get the UIRT to successfully learn any commands from my Sky Digital (Satellite receiver) remote control.

Most of the keys on the remote appear to learn OK, but never work when transmitted. If I paste the working code in from ProntoEdit then there's some fundamental differences between what the UIRT learnt and the code that the Pronto learnt. e.g.

Numeric 1 button

USB-UIRT learnt
09522F360F060F0A13A0010000004000000000000000000000
Carrier 40 KHz

which doesn't work, but if I paste the code in from ProntoEdit I get

08AE2F301008100810A0010000004000000000000000000000
Carrier 36KHz

which does work.

The IR Debug for a press and hold of button 1 is below

The "Sky" button on the remote won't learn at all, the bar gets to half way and won't go any further, but I've already seen that reported here, http://www.girder.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3126, and the fix posted works.

I should stress this isn't a major problem, I've successfully pasted the codes in from ProntoEdit and my computer can now control my satellite box which was what I was aiming for so I'm a happy bunny. Just curious as to why there's such a discrepancy between what the UIRT and Pronto learnt?

Thanks

Bruce,

The two codes (learned vs. imported) *are* essentially the same, but with some timing differences. This can be due to many things, including
a) Having remote too close or too far away while learning.
b) Normal timing variances in remotes.

If possible I would appreciate if you would try learning a button again and then try chaging the carrier setting to 36KHz and see if it works. I need to create a 'how to learn' document because at this time the Learn process does *not* set the carrier frequency *unless* you're importing from Pronto. That will change in future firmware upgrades.

Hi John

Oops, sorry didn't realise that.

I've tried again with learning that button with the carrier frequency set to 36KHz. Whether I have the remote 1 foot or six feet away, the learnt code is exactly the same as the one I posted, so it doesn't appear as if distance or noise is a factor. With the carrier frequency set at 36KHz when I test the learnt code the IR Receive indicator on the Satellite box doesn't flash to indicate its receiving any signal so I guess the timing differences are quite critical in this case.

I'm guessing that the Sky remote signals are quite picky. When I first got my Pronto I ended up relearning most of the signals using Tonto rather than ProntoEdit. The Sky remote codes learnt from ProntoEdit just didn't work reliably. Tonto seemed to have a better learning function used in conjunction with the Pronto.

Bruce,

Understood. Let's keep this issue on the back burner and revisit it when the next firmware upgrade (which should support cycle-exact learning using the USB-UIRT's built-in wideband IR detector) is available. Hopefully then these codes will be learned better.

That's fine John, I've got a workaround that's working. I'm just really pleased that I've got a working Infra Red transmitter that controls my satellite box.

I can't thank you enough for making these available to us mortals who didn't fancy dabbling with a soldering iron. My record with electronics is not good, I'd probably have ended up with a pile of junk if I'd tried making the serial UIRT.

Thanks again for your help
