I need to be able to control 4 Direct TV boxes from one PC. Is there a way to do this with one USB-UIRT or do I need a second?

I don't think you can reprogram DirecTv boxes to different IR addresses,

so, if they are all the same model, you would need two USB-UIRT's.

Xantech also makes an IR router for this purpose. I may get one to control multiple of their RP41 preamps rather than relying on the PC for zoning.

Depends on the DirecTV boxes you get. I'm using 1 USBIRT to control 3 boxes (Hughes). Each box can be assigned to a unique Remote ID, so you can have up to 8 of them stacked without IR interference.

That leads to my question.. Is there a limit to what the USBIRT can learn? Specifically, if I want to control 5 or 6 boxes using same IRT, can that be done?

There's really no limit -- since the USB-UIRT does not store the IR codes inside it. IR codes are passed onto the application and it is up to the application or plugin to store the codes on the PC.
