How to control my A/V gear

I've just purchased a USB-UIRT with the sole intention of controlling my audio/video gear from my PC. I downloaded Girder but I can't make heads or tails of it.
What I would really like to do is write my own application in VB to control the USB-UIRT so my question is has anyone else done this or is there a VB component available that I could drop into VB to do this?
