The hole for a 1/8" jack

I noticed that there is a hole in the back of the box (I got the +56k version). There is one just like it on the back of my cable box called IR. Not being well versed in IR matters, I'm cautious in assuming that the UIRT can communicate with my cable box using a mono 1/8" male to male cable. Is that right?

My cable box, by the way, is the SciAtl Explorer 4200 from Cablevision.

Can I just go to RadioShack, pick up a couple of male 1/8" connectors and use any old cable?

Nice idea, but sorry to say won't work (any may damage your cable box). The IR jack on the cable box is likely for an IR *emitter* (just like the jack on the USB-UIRT). Some cable boxes can blast IR to a VCR to set up automated scheduled recordings.
